Creating a Brand for the Spurn Point Foundation

Exploring the power of Thorngumbald as a brand typeface

A typeface is the tone of voice and foundation of a brand. As designers, we’ve often found ourselves struggling to find the perfect font for a brand, which led to the birth of Fettle Foundry.

Our mission is to create typefaces that are readable, accessible, practical and effective for brands. In 2022 we released Thorngumbald, a typeface designed explicitly for accessibility

To showcase Thorngumbald and how it could be used in a brand, we decided to create a concept for the fictional Spurn Point Foundation, an organisation dedicated to helping communities and wildlife effected by coastal erosion along the Yorkshire coastline.

The Spurn Point Foundation Logo

The logo is inspired by pilot boats that are found on the humber. These boats help ships navigate the treacherous estuary to safety and are often yellow and adorned with blue stripes.

Creating a clear and concise call to action

Coastal erosion affects many communities on the east coast, as well as wildlife, with houses and villages at risk of falling into the sea. The stripes and colours represent the need to guide both to a long-term sustainable and safe future as well as acting as a rally cry for those that are not yet engaged with the issue.

The yellow and blue also represents the land and the sea, as well as people and wildlife.

Exploring how the stripes can be used as a visual device

This colour combination has been tested against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for the minimal required colour contrast. A contrast of 4.5:1 is required to meet AA standards, and this colour combination has a contrast of 6.5:1.

Additional applications have been explored to show the scope of the logo for embroidery and printing.
