Hutton is a sans-serif that features flattened overshoots, shoulders, arms, and bowls.
When we were young we sometimes write text against the long edge of a ruler to ensure everything was level on a baseline. This resulted in extremely flattened bowls. Hutton aimed to take this effect and explore how it could be applied to a modern digital typeface. The result is a typeface that features a flat upper and lower overshoot on rounded glyphs like uppercase O and lowercase d.
Hutton is designed for a wide range of applications, working effectively at both text and display sizes. When aligning the baseline or cap height to the top or bottom edge of another element on a page the characteristics of Hutton are most noticeable, making the family well-suited for applications that emphasise mechanical structure and order, as well as nostalgic or minimalist design approaches.
For added flexibility, Hutton includes two stylistic sets: one with geometric characters and another with humanistic characters. These allow a designer a choice depending on the desired aesthetic for the design.
Hutton provides comprehensive European language support with contextual kerning for common diacritic combinations. It also includes localised alternatives for languages such as Polish.
