Burstwick is a modern sans-serif designed for boosting accessibility when used for websites and apps.
Burstwick features a large X-height, open counters, and spacing optimised for body text. Its design draws a lot of inspiration from Thorngumbald, one of Fettle Foundry’s most popular font families, however, Burstwick’s forms are designed to be more natural and versatile in how they approach accessibility, making it suitable for applications that demand a typeface that feels more neutral.
One of the guiding principles for Burstwick was to reject symmetry. For example, the top half of the lowercase c is noticeably narrower than the bottom half. These details aim to aid legibility and provide a subtle dynamism.
Burstwick supports numerous Latin languages and includes thorough kerning for accented character combinations, making it an excellent choice for organisations that cater to multilingual users. Furthermore, it offers a variety of special characters and alternatives to enhance flexibility and choice.
The font’s weights are structured around a core RIBBI system, with additional weights available for specific situations that may require a slight adjustment.
